A legendary expo for motoring enthusiasts across the globe, the Geneva International Motor Show has been revving its engines since 1905. Since its first modest showcase of Fords, Cadillacs and Royal Enfields in the city’s Electoral Building more than a century ago, the Geneva International Motor Show has established itself as a major highlight in the car industry calendar. From the freshest Fiat 500 to the fastest Ferrari, it’s on this stage that many of the world’s glossiest chassis and strongest horsepowers are debuted.

Car manufacturers and enthusiasts gather from around the world not only for a glimpse of the latest supercar releases and to brush up on cutting-edge technical advances but also to engage in discussions about the political and social issues impacting automobile manufacturing. In 2018, the event’s lens was firmly focused on electric cars, while this year, visitors can expect a continuing theme of sustainability, with talks chaired by representatives from leading global manufacturers and up-and-coming designers. Highlights include a glimpse of the sleek new Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake and the hotly anticipated debut of the redesigned BMW 7 Series.

In addition, this year the Pininfarina Battista takes its first outing in Geneva. Built by the Italian coach makers behind the Alfa Romeo Spider that rose to fame in the 1960s, this entirely electric vehicle is hailed as the prototype eco-friendly supercar. Slated for production in 2020, Pininfarina has said it won’t be making more than 150 of the coveted model. Also launching a hotly anticipated eco-car is Aston Martin with its new electric concept Lagonda, as well as a new release from Polestar, Volvo’s electric offshoot.

The star of this year’s show, however, has to be Bentley, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2019. To mark the occasion, the British manufacturer has promised to unveil a special centenary model at the show, which is said to be influenced by the design of its renowned race cars.
