Whether you’re an avid skier or a beginner on the baby slopes, there’s nothing like some fresh Alpine air to clear the head (and lungs). Luckily, there are a number of scenic mountain retreats within easy reach of Geneva and our beautiful lakeside Hotel D’Angleterre. Best enjoyed with a fresh dusting of powder, you can be strapped into your skis and flying down the mountain in under an hour. Here are a few of the best ski resorts near Geneva to try next time you’re in town.

La Clusaz

Set in the heart of the Haute-Savoie region, the charm and authenticity of historic La Clusaz is unmatched. Combining the picturesque landscape of the Aravis Mountains with 220km of fantastic freeriding conditions, topped off with delicious French cuisine, this small alpine village doesn’t disappoint. And if it’s great tasting cheese (that smells to the high heavens) you’re after, you’ll find some of the best Reblochon in the region here. Be sure to hit the slopes before indulging – the portions are by no means small.

Morzine

Also located in the Haute-Savoie, Morzine holds fort at the centre of the renowned Portes du Soleil resorts, and offers an ample 650km of piste to play with. The terrain is tailored to an intermediate level, making this resort ideal for first timers and families alike, while more experienced skiers can ride over to the adjoining slopes of popular Avoriaz for the morning before heading back to Morzine’s lively bars for some Savoyard après ski. Foodies should visit neighbouring Les Gets for traditional Savoy cuisine – order the potato, cheese and lardon tartiflette, followed by a locally produced (and pungent) digestif génépi liqueur.

Host of the first winter Olympics, Chamonix is without doubt one of the best ski resorts near Geneva and comes highly recommended if you have a few days to spend exploring the Alps. Fantastic skiing awaits atop the mighty Mont Blanc, and whether it’s the long, tree-lined slopes or the sought-after free ride and off-piste snow, Chamonix caters to all and can stop you in your tracks with its natural beauty. If you’re after a serious challenge, try your hand at ice climbing or extreme skiing – this is, after all, the “European capital of extreme adventure sports”.

Open all year round, Les Carroz sits pretty at 1100m, right at the heart of Europe’s fifth largest ski area, ‘Le Grand Massif’. The village resort is easily accessible and suitable for any and all ski abilities, and has recently installed those sought after ski lockers, making it a firm favourite with families. Aside from its wide stretches of open piste and relaxed vibe, the real beauty of Les Carroz lies within its range of traditional chalet style accommodation and sun-drenched terraces, best enjoyed drink in hand.

The first purpose-built resort in the Alps and a long-standing favourite of the French aristocracy, Megève is one of the best ski resorts near Geneva. With over 200 pisted slopes, nicely spanning the black to green rating, Megève suits all abilities, and if you’re keen you can always try out one of their cross-country skiing trails. Alongside a multitude of upmarket bars and restaurants, the town has an open-air skating rink and dog sledding to entertain the kids. And when it comes to après ski, fans of the infamous mountain top ‘Folie Douce’ bar will be especially pleased to find the Austrian franchise opening its fifth bar atop Megève’s Mont Joux on 20th December. Just in time for Christmas.
