This summer, Switzerland’s hills are well and truly alive with the sound of music. Famous for its copious music festivals – many of which draw a discerning international audience – Switzerland offers spectacularly picturesque surroundings in which to soak up some great music. Located on the banks of the picturesque Lake Geneva, this two-week long celebration of all things bebop, blues and boogie is the world’s second largest jazz festival. Aside from a stellar programme of leading jazz musicians like Herbie Hancock and George Benson, the Montreaux Jazz Festival will be showcasing some of the biggest international names across all genres and eras. This year Bryan Ferry, Grace Jones and Tom Jones will all be taking to one of the festival’s six stages.

For six days in July each year the small town of Nyon, just north of Geneva, turns into a micro-city of 280,00 music lovers. What began as a humble folk festival in 1976 has certainly come a long way. A unique global village with a carnival atmosphere, Paleo is run entirely on the collective spirit and generosity of volunteers. This year expect to rock out to the sounds of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jamiroquai and Arcade Fire, not to mention sample delicious international street food.

Just two hours from Geneva, Verbier Festival unites the world’s premier classical musicians and opera stars in the striking Swiss Alps. A two-week classical extravaganza, Verbier Festival will play host to violin virtuosos like Joshua Bell and Renaud Capucon (pictured) as well as operatic performances of Elektra and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Jazz aficionados will love the Fest’Off venue, whose programme is entirely dedicated to the smooth sounds of jazz.
21st July – 6th August 2017
Mixing the coolest up-and-coming and established indie and electronic acts, Zurich Open Air is one for those who like to keep their finger on the pulse. This year the four-day festival is headlined by world-conquering folk-rockers Mumford & Sons, party-starters Major Lazer, The xx and The Prodigy.
