The diverse markets of Geneva attract locals and tourists alike, so if you're on the hunt for a Swiss watch or local produce, here's our pick of the best.

Hotel d'Angleterre

Geneva is known for its Swiss watch boutiques, but as most tourists make a beeline for the luxury stores, another side of the city lies waiting to be discovered at its local markets. From farmers’ markets offering fresh Swiss produce and international cuisine, to artisan markets filled with intriguing trinkets and handmade crafts, there’s plenty to shop for besides timepieces. On your next trip to the elegant Hotel d’Angleterre, get a taste of local culture and pick up some unique souvenirs at these markets in Geneva.

Plainpalais Farmers’ Market & Flea Market

Plainpalais is a giant square that’s home to not one, but two of Geneva’s biggest and best markets. Taking place every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday is the Plainpalais Farmers’ Market. The colourful market is a tasty hub of aromas and flavours, with a sprawling mass of stalls showcasing fresh, seasonal produce that’s often of greater quality and variety than the supermarkets. As well as fruit and vegetables, there are myriad stands serving international cuisine.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Plainpalais takes a break from food to play host to the Plainpalais Flea Market. The historic market has been running since the 1970s and is the largest of its kind in the city. Visit to browse a rich and varied selection of stalls displaying everything from valuable collectables and antiques to vintage clothing and furniture.

Carouge Farmer’s Market

Carouge, a beautiful district in southern Geneva, is characterised by its Italian-inspired architecture, but locally it’s beloved for its bi-weekly food market. Taking place every Wednesday and Saturday morning on Place du Marché, in the shadow of the beautiful Eglise Sainte-Croix, the Carouge Farmer’s Market is the place to go to stock up on local produce. Visit for a fascinating insight into local life as you mix with Genevans and browse stalls laden with fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread, Swiss cheeses, local honey, preserves, and much more.

A stone’s throw from Geneva’s famous shopping street, Rue du Rhône, is Place de la Fusterie, a square lined by luxury boutique of brands including Audemars Piguet and Bulgari. Every Thursday for nearly 30 years, the piazza has hosted a popular market specialising in artisan arts and crafts. Each week, local craftspeople come together to showcase their latest creations, many of which have been handmade. It’s an excellent opportunity to pick up something a little different that you won’t find in the international boutiques of Rue du Rhône.

La Halle de Rive

A gastronomic haven in the heart of Geneva, La Halle de Rive has been keeping Genevans well fed for 45 years. The indoor food market is home to more than 20 stores specialising in fresh, local fare, ranging from fish from Lake Geneva and meat from the Swiss countryside, to flowers, cheese, chocolate, and more. Browse the colourful stands and snack on flavours from around the world at your choice of gourmet bistro before treating yourself to sweet treats at artisan pâtisserie and chocolaterie, Frédéric Ducret.

When in Geneva, stay at Hotel d’Angleterre, which is within walking distance of many of Geneva’s best markets. After being inspired by the produce on offer in the markets, enjoy a leisurely dinner of local cuisine at Windows Restaurant, overlooking the beautiful Lake Geneva.
